Join Us for a Fair to Remember!

Stop by and see the Hunterdon County Historical Society at the county’s 4-H and Agricultural Fair from now until Sunday, Aug. 29.

Members of our Board of Trustees, staff and our terrific volunteers will be working at the booth. We’ll have giveaways, along with books and other items available for purchase. And, of course, we’ll be more than happy to discuss local history with you, and you can learn about membership and how to help protect our county’s rich past. We look forward to seeing you there.

Hours for the fair are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Wednesday to Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The fair will be held at the South County Park, which is off Route 179 in Ringoes.

The Flemington Fair’s origins stretch back to 1856, when a group of local citizens cobbled together several pieces of land from Raritan Township farmers.

The Flemington Fair had operated off Route 31, where Lowe’s is currently located, until 1999. Shortly thereafter, it moved to its present 42-acre site in Ringoes, which had been the location of a drive-in movie theater.

The fair operated continuously through the years, but a few interruptions did occur; in 1862 by the Civil War army camp nearby, in 1918 by WWI, in 1942 and 1943 by the need to conserve fuel and rubber for the WWII effort, and last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
