HCHS Mourns the Passing of John Kuhl

Everyone at HCHS is deeply saddened by the passing yesterday of long-time trustee John Kuhl. Mr. Kuhl was an indefatigable researcher of the Civil War and Three Bridges. He authored “History of The Three Bridges Reformed Church,” and “Hunterdon County in the Civil War.” In 2012, he and Michael Gesner coauthored “The Kuhl Family of Hunterdon County.” And with Dr. David Martin, he coauthored “Stars Over New Jersey,” presenting the illustrated biographies of 285 Civil War army and navy flag officers with New Jersey connections. He also was a regular contributor to the Hunterdon Historical Newsletter, writing about everything from the Jetport, to Bellewood Park, and gone-but-not forgotten movie theaters. His newspaper index files, which he worked on for decades, along with his research on Three Bridges and New Jersey soldiers in the Civil War, which were recently donated to the Society, will benefit researchers for generations to come.

Mr. Kuhl was a Navy veteran, serving much of his time in Antarctica. After resigning his commission for family reasons, Mr. Kuhl worked for Agway, and its successor, Growmark, for over 40 years. He joined the Board of Trustees in the 1970s and served as secretary and, later, treasurer for many years. Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this sad time.
