Doric House Museum to Reopen with Weddings Exhibition
HCHS will reopen the Doric House Museum this June, and will celebrate with an exhibition that’s perfect for the month: a look at the history of weddings in Hunterdon County.
The exhibition, titled “Love Unveiled — 250 Years of Saying ‘I Do!,” will showcase items from our collections including several wedding dresses; bridegroom apparel complete with top hat, scarf and cane; a bridesmaid’s dress; wedding photographs; bridal scrapbooks; marriage certificates; and a trousseau.
The nonprofit HCHS will open the exhibition by showing a little love to its members with an exclusive opening on Saturday, June 14. Doors will open at 2 p.m. and members will be invited to view the exhibition in the downstairs of the house. Volunteers will chat about the items on display.
Then, join us in the Hiram E. Deats Memorial Library for a special talk offering insight on the history of wedding customs. The afternoon will feature music and a tasty wedding favor.
We are asking for a $10 “wedding gift” that will be earmarked toward preserving wedding-related items in our textiles collection. Check our website and email newsletters for more information, including details on how to RSVP for this special afternoon at the Doric House Museum.
The Museum will be open on subsequent Saturdays through the summer from 1 to 4 p.m. for guests to view the exhibition. For group tours, call 908-782-1091. The exhibition will be open through August.
HCHS is seeking volunteers to work on Saturday afternoons to help with the exhibition. Duties would include greeting museum visitors and helping with the guided tours. If you’d like to volunteer, please email hunterdonhistoryadm@gmail.com or call 908-782-1091.
