Explore Historic Flemington on Foot

Step back in time and take a stroll through historic Flemington with lifelong resident and Hunterdon County Historical Society Trustee President Peter Goodell.

This fall, HCHS will offer two walking tours of Flemington’s Main Street. The first, on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m., will focus on the northern section of Main Street. The second, on Saturday, October 17 at 10 a.m., will explore the southern half of town.

The tours will feature:

*  Rare photographs from the early 1900s, taken by Flemington photographer Asher Stryker, presented alongside modern views of downtown streets.
*  Fascinating stories of vanished or altered buildings and the movers and shakers who once lived and worked in them.
*  A look at how Flemington’s downtown has changed over the past 120-plus years.

Both tours will begin in front of the Doric House Museum, 114 Main Street, Flemington.

The tours are free for HCHS members and $10 for nonmembers. Space is limited, so reservations are recommended.

The rain date for the north tour is Sunday, Sept. 13 at noon, and for the south tour Sunday, Sept. 27 at noon.

Asher Stryker (1877–1955) photographed Flemington and surrounding communities in the early 1900s, capturing houses, businesses, churches, farms,  and schools. In 2021, his descendants donated 1,278 glass-plate negatives to HCHS.

Tour leader Peter Goodell has spent months researching the photographs, identifying locations and uncovering stories about the people and places they depict.
