Goodspeed Histories: The Plot Thickens

A short article this week, to make up for an egregious error in last week’s post, in which I thought I had figured out who had drawn the early portraits of Capt. Kidd and Samuel Jennings, hiding in an ancient volume kept at the NJ State Archives.

But I was sloppy about my citation, and Bette Epstein, librarian at the Archives, figured out where the pictures really were, instead of where I thought they were—and that made a huge difference in figuring out who the artist was. Probably not who I thought.

So, first I had to amend the original article:
