Join Us on Sunday, April 6 for a HCHS Wine Tasting Fundraiser
Supporting local history never tasted so good!
The Hunterdon County Historical Society is teaming up with The Cree Wine Company at the Perryville Inn for a wine-tasting fundraiser on Sunday, April 6 from 2 to 4 p.m.
The event will include hot hors d’oeuvres and an exceptional selection of wines chosen by Chris Cree, who is New Jersey’s only Master of Wine and one of just 57 in the nation.
Guests will sample fine wines while learning about the inn’s unique history, and how it was saved from destruction in the 1950s. Built in 1813, the Perryville Inn was a favorite stopping place for stagecoaches on the old Easton-to-Brunswick turnpike.
To make the event extra special, the historical society will bring one of the most prized items in its collection to the event: the original wooden Perryville Inn sign that once hung from a pole outside the tavern. One side depicts President Andrew Jackson, the other a large American flag. The sign was purportedly painted by William Bonnell, a well-known Clinton portrait artist of the 1820s and 1830s. HCHS also will present a brief talk on Bonnell.
Cost for the event is $125 per person, with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit HCHS. Reserve spots at www.hunterdonhistory.org. You can also reserve a space by mailing a check payable to HCHS to 114 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822. For questions, call 908-782-1091 or email hunterdonhistoryadm@gmail.com.
Located at 167 Perryville Road, just off Route 78 in Hampton, The Perryville Inn is home to the Cree Wine Company, and is renowned as one of the best places in New Jersey to dine, and to taste, learn about, and buy wine. It also offers wine classes and special dinners.
The nonprofit HCHS was founded in 1885 to preserve and share the county’s history. It operates the Doric House Museum, the Hiram Deats Memorial Library, and a state-of-the-art archive building that houses a remarkable collection of documents, photos, and artifacts.
