Locating Your House in Time

If you just want to see what the property looked like before your house was built, consider these resources.

  • Check county tax maps, which exist back into the mid 1800’s. Since much of the county was once famed and is now covered by second generation forests, the old dividing lines are often very difficult to find without help.
  • The website HistoricAerials.com has aerial photographs dating back into the mid 1920’s in some cases.
  • Google Earth and Bing’s “Birds Eye View” provide high resolution images of your property as it exists today. It helps you find old boundary lines and even old foundations that are not obvious from ground level.
  • Ask us at the Society for help in starting your research effort.
