April 1st means practical jokes to us, but a hundred years ago it meant packing up the house and barns and hitting the road for a new location. These were mostly farmers who must have felt they would have a better year in a new place, but it must have been hard on their wives, who not only had to do most of the packing, but provide a hearty meal at the end of the day.
